For March 11, 18, and 25, we’re starting up a new teaching series focusing in our relationship with God. Typically, a teaching series will challenge us to change in some way–to be more loving, to be more humble, to be more generous….This is a unique series in that we’re not challenged to change, we’re challenged to go deeper in relationship with He who changes us. God is working, God is moving, God is speaking, it’s our job to tune our lives to the right frequency to be able to know His presence in our lives and hear what He is saying to us.
As a crucial aspect of this series, we would like everyone to take the Sacred Pathways test. It comes from Gary Thomas’ Sacred Pathways, which challenges to widen our typically narrow understanding of who God is. Join us beginning this Sunday morning in a 3-part series that will cause us to go deeper in our life with God.
Well, it’s that time of the year again…Christmas! The nights are getting colder, the pine trees are reaching higher, you can almost hear jingle bells and children laughing nearby, and, of course, retail stores everywhere are going crazy. But are these the signs of Christmas? or are they just our signs of Christmas?
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.”
This Christmas, we want to tell the world that “God is still with us.” We want the world to experience the hope, the salvation, the life, and the good news that Jesus Christ brings. We’re going to do it by giving generously to 3 different causes:
1. Charity:water – We’d like to bring clean water to those who do not have access to it. 1 Institutional well for a hospital or school costs $20,000. See charitywater.org.
2. Shoreline Community Church in Long Beach Church Park – We’re landscaping a church park for one of our missional church plants, Citylights Church, we have been partnering with for a few years now. Cost: $15,000. See citylights.org
3. Various Global Missionary Projects – We’d like to give the missionaries we currently support an extra boost to help fund various missionary projects all around the world. Cost: $15,000
The Kudos – Transportation to Cambodia
The Silzers – Missionary Trip to China, Brazil, and the Philippines
Mikey and Christa – His Little Feet
San Telmo School in Mexico – 1 Teacher for 2 months
Japan Relief Efforts
The Van Meters – Pastoral Care in Asia
This Christmas, we’re encouraging everyone to spend less money on presents for your loved ones and give more presence to them. Take the money you would have spent and join in our united effort to give clean water to an impoverished village, landscape a park for an urban church, and fund various missionary projects all around the world. Let’s celebrate the true reason for the Christmas season!
We hope you’ve been blessed going through the book of 1 Peter with us as a church body. It’s an engaging letter that’s trying to answer the question: “How then shall we live?” for the Early Church. It begs us to ask ourselves too: “How then will we live?” As followers of Jesus Christ, what kind of impact will we make on society? Will we make any at all? Loving God and loving our neighbors involves everything about us: from the clothes we wear to the phones we buy to the neighborhood we live in to the people we associate with to how we lead and guide our families.
Looking ahead, what 1 Peter is doing is setting up the necessary theological underpinnings for our upcoming Fall and Christmas 2011 season. We will be taking a 40-Day All-Church journey through Richard Stearns’ Hole in the Gospel and revisiting the Advent Conspiracy once again trying to get this Christmas to be a season that is truly driven by Christ’s mission through us. Ultimately, our goal for GVBC is that we become a church that loves our neighbors in such a powerful way that they can’t deny the good news of Jesus Christ.
If you’d like to follow along with us an iPad or a Tablet PC, download the manuscript here. If you missed a message, the sermons are free and online.
We’re looking forward to our journey ahead together!
